Domain Names have a variety of basic rules :
 

Are there any rules for registering domain names?

A domain name can contain the English-language letters A through Z, and the digits 0 through 9. You can also use hyphens, but hyphens cannot begin or end your domain name. Spaces and special characters (i.e. - !, $, &, #, etc.) are not permitted. It must be a minimum of 3 characters, and a maximum length of 67 characters. Domain Names are not case sensitive  and  cannot include spaces.

Though .com, .net and .org domain names exceeding a total of 26 characters are supported by most web browsers, certain web browsers, email programs and other Internet related applications may not support domain names over 26 characters.

 

What are the rules for the registration of .com, .net and .org names?

Rules for .com, .net and .org Domain Name registrations:
.COM - to be used for commercial and personal sites
.ORG - recommended for not-for-profit organizations
.NET - recommended for companies involved in data networking especially related to the Internet

 

What are the rules for registration of .biz, .com, .info, .name, .net and .org names?

The .com, .info, .name, .net, and .org TLDs are open and unrestricted.

Traditionally, however, names in.com are used for commercial and personal sites, in .net are used by organizations involved in Internet infrastructure activities and .org is used by non-commercial organizations.

.biz is reserved for use by businesses. For more information on .biz restrictions, please contact your registrar or visit the .biz registry operator at www.nic.biz. .name is dedicated exclusively to individuals' personal names.

 

What are the rules for registration of .aero, .coop, and .museum names?

The .aero, .coop, and .museum TLDs are sponsored TLDs and are designed for use within a specified community. Registration restrictions for these TLDs have been developed by the sponsor with input from the community. For more information on registering names in these TLDs, please contact your registrar or visit the individual registry sites at www.nic.aero, www.nic.coop, or www.nic.museum, respectively.
